Discover the expressive landscapes and independent spirit of Shitao (1642–1707), the Chinese painter, calligrapher, poet, and theorist who challenged artistic convention during the early Qing dynasty. This pocket guide contains the complete translated text of “Bitter Gourd Monk’s Comments on Painting” and explores his remarkable life and reveals what to look for in his varied brushwork, shifting viewpoints, bold use of ink, poetic inscriptions, and deeply personal responses to mountains, rivers, trees, and gardens. Learn how Shitao drew upon the traditions of Chinese landscape painting while insisting on the importance of individual experience and creative freedom. A focused study of one important work demonstrates how image, calligraphy, and thought come together in a unified expression.
Featuring more than 65 full-color reproductions, this beautifully designed guide introduces one of the most original voices in the history of Chinese painting. Translation, introduction, and analysis by Aura Yanping Gao.
